Abstract
ABSTRACTSome terrible health challenges like severe terminal illnesses raise the issue of what makes life worth living. The search for an answer has led to the debate about euthanasia with philosophers having varied and opposing views. This study examines Peter Singer's endorsement of euthanasia and his claim about the "right to die." Our purpose is to ascertain the plausibility or otherwise of his position. From his utilitarian viewpoint, Singer argues that personal choice and reducing suffering should guide decisions about life and death. He asserts that euthanasia is justified when suffering outweighs benefits, especially in cases of severe pain and poor quality of life. He also thinks that this practice can be effectively regulated. The qualitative research design was adopted while the analytic and evaluative philosophical methods were used to examine the data. The study admits that euthanasia, as Singer argues, demands careful consideration of both moral principles and practical realities. However, the study found that Singer's overemphasis on autonomy, pain relief and utility overlooked the deeper values of human life such as its sacredness, origin, and inherent dignity. The study calls for an ethical framework that values human life in all its forms and at all stages, highlighting the need for greater care and respect for the vulnerable in the society.
