Investigation on the Prevalence of Poultry Diseases in Some Selected Local Government Areas of Kano State

Abstract
ABSTRACTThe study was carried out to investigate the prevalence of poultry diseases in some selected local government areas in Kano State. The selected Local Government Areas were; Dawakin Kudu, Dawakin Tofa, Ungoggo and Rimin Gado. A total of one hundred (100) questionnaires were administered to small and medium scale poultry farmers. Data on Socio-Demographic, Awareness, Farmers Pracatices, Challenges and Recomendation were collected and analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS 16.0) software. The result showed high disease awareness of amongst farmers (96%) with coccidiosis (100%), newcastle disease (96.9%), and avian influenza (95.9%) were the predominant diseases affecting poultry in the study areas. Farmers predominantly relied on biosecurity measures such as isolating sick birds (69.7%), maintaining hygiene (67.7%), and using herbal remedies (55.6%), while vaccination rates remained low (31.3%).Challenges that were revealed includes high costs of treatment (73%), limited veterinary access (67%), inadequate knowledge (60%) and difficulty accessing clean water. The results also showed gender disparities were male respondent (67%) while female respondents (33%). It was concluded base on this findings that addressing these barriers, poultry farming can improve disease resilience, reduced diseases out break, reduce antibiotic dependence, and promote sustainable livelihoods and adequate diseases prevalence management. It was therefore recommended that the need for targeted interventions, such as farmer training , farmers cooperative development for resource-sharing, and government policy reforms to subsidize veterinary inputs.
