Classroom Assessment and Biology Students Motivation in Secondary Schools in Ekiti State

Abstract
The study examined the relationship between classroom assessment and Biology students’ motivation in secondary schools in Ekiti State. The study adopted descriptive survey research design. The population of the study consisted of all senior secondary school students in secondary schools in Ekiti State. The sample for the study consisted one hundred (100) senior secondary school Biology students. The instrument used in this study for the purpose of data collection was a close ended questionnaire designed and distributed by the researcher. The questionnaire was title “Classroom Assessment and Biology Students’ Motivation Questionnaire (CABSMQ)”. The questionnaire was divided into two sections. The section A and B. In section A sought for personal information of the respondents while section B sought for information on Classroom Assessment and biology students’ motivation in secondary schools in Ekiti State. Face and content validity of the instrument was carried out by the researcher's supervisor, experts in the Department of Science Education and also, experts in Test, Measurement and Evaluation Department of the Faculty of Education, Ekiti State University. Test-retest method of reliability was for the study which yielded a coefficient of 0.70. The instrument was administered on the respondents by the researcher. The administration of instrument took 3 weeks. The data collected from the questionnaire were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. Descriptive statistics of frequency counts and percentages were used to answer the research questions while the hypotheses were tested using Pearson Product Moment Correlation. All the hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance.Based on the findings of the study, it was concluded that class assessment in Biology influence the Biology students’ motivation in secondary schools in Ekiti State. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that the school management should from time to time ensure that teachers carry out formative assessment in the Biology class after lesson.
