Abstract
The quality assessment of borehole water from the newly constructed hostel in Auchi polytechnic, was studied and compared with World Health Organization standards. The parameters measured the temperature, color, pH, electrical conductivity, total hardness. calcium hardness, magnesium hardness, total solids, total dissolved solids. total suspended solids, alkalinity, chloride, sulphate, phosphate, nitrate, copper, cadmium, zinc. lead, iron, and total coliform. The study was carried out to ascertain the quality of the borehole water in the newly constructed hostel, which accommodates student in Auchi polytechnic in terms of physical, chemical and microbiological quality parameters. The results revealed that pH is 6.7, conductivity is 508uslcm, TDS is 254mg/L and sodium is 0.93mg/l. Heavy metal results for Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu are 0.278, 0.074, 0.110, 0.48 respectively. The result of microbial analysis was 1, Heterotrophic fungi and coliform count which shows that the water is contaminated with heterotrophic bacterial. The results revealed that the borehole water in the newly constructed hostel in Auchi polytechnic is not fit for drinking but can be used for irrigation purposes.
