Design and Implementation of Web Based Library Information Management System

Library Management System refers to an application that is specifically designed to manage generally small and medium size libraries to help mainly those in charge of the library at that particular time to help maintain and keep tracks of library users and books. Library Management System as an application is mainly used by librarian to manage the library using a computerized system where he/she can record various transactions like issue of books, addition of new books, addition of new students etc. in Osun State University, library management methods and administration is very manual one in the sense that the information management methods are mostly done using the file system, student access to library resources are heavily manual, and that the library catalogue is done using the file system. As a result, accidents of data loss are common, library record storage is often costly on the long run and implementation of web-based library information management system is a facility that aims at allowing students to access and borrow from the library without having to visit the library physically. It allows library staff to manage student activity in the library and create digital catalogues without using the manual bulky file system. It also makes the accessibility of library resources easy for students and lecturers alike. The evaluation of the performance of the developed system was carried out by administering questionnaires on 60 users of the system based on usability and speed of processing. The results of the evaluation of the developed system showed that 45-out of.the 60 users agreed that the system is easy to use. Also 50 out of 60 users agreed that the system is fast while 10 users agreed. It is therefore concluded that a web-based library information management system is capable of providing a user friendly and accessible means of a web-based library information management system has been developed. The new. system helps in the reduction of redundancies and inconsistencies and ensures user defined rules to ensure the integrity of data. This programming language used to implement this project is HTML because it is object oriented language and it is user friendly.
