Effects of Methaphetamine on the Testis of an Adolescent Male Wistar Rat.

Methamphetamine is a powerful, highly addictive stimulant that affects the central nervous system. It takes the form of a white, odourless, bitter-tasting crystalline powder that easily dissolves in water or alcohol. This research is aimed at investigating the effect of methamphetamine on the testis of adolescent male wistar rats. Sixteen (16) wistar rats were used for this study. The sixteen wistar rats were divided into four groups, four for each group, Group A, B, C and D. Group A was the control group, received only food and water. Groups B, C and D were the test groups. Group B received 2mg/kg body weight of methamphetamine, Group C received 4mg/kg body weight of methamphetamine, Group D received 10mg/kg body weight of methamphetamine. The Meth was administered via oral route with the use of oral cannula, twice a day; morning and evening for Twenty-one days. Twenty-four hours after administration, the rats were anesthesized and sacrificed, the testicular tissues were removed and sperm samples was also taken. Results showed a significant decrease in body weight and organ weight of Groups B, C, and D when compared to group A due to the intake of methamphetamine, with increase the level of testosterone. Histopathological findings showed moderate to severe effect on testicular tissues and severe spermatogenic arrest with moderate testicular cell atrophy and apoptosis of testicular cells in Groups B,C and D.
