Isolation and Identification of Microorganisms Associated With the Use of Automated Teller Machine (atm)in Bamidele Olumilua University of Education,science and Technology Ikere Ekiti

An essential tool in the banking industry and other financial institutions is the Automated Teller Machine (ATM). ATMs is now considered as a potential source of infectious diseases due to frequent contact and use. Therefore, this research study evaluated Isolation and identification of microorganisms associated with the use of Automated Teller Machines in Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology (BOUESTI) Ikere and Ado. Eighteen samples were obtained from the ATM machine of different bank and was collected using sterile swab stick. These samples were analysed and bacteria were isolated and identified using biochemical test. The samples were then immediately transported to the microbiology Laboratory of BOUESTI, Using the streaking technique, the agar were inoculated with the swab sticks and incubated at appropriate temperature. The plate was observed for growth and biochemical test was done and the bacterial isolates from samples analyzed. The isolated bacteria were identified were Salmonella enterica, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Streptococcus pneumoniae. The percentage of the isolated bacteria on ATM keyboard in this study 5.26%, 10.5%, 19.7%, 32.9% and 43.4% for Salmonella enterica, Escherichia coli ,Streptococcus pneumoniae, Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus respectively. The percentage of the isolated bacteria on ATM screens in this study 1.96%, 17.6%, 5.88%, 33.3% and 41.2% for Salmonella enterica, Escherichia coli ,Streptococcus pneumoniae, Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus respectively. Based on these findings, it appears that ATMs may be a "pathogen city." The bank's authorities are advised to maintain proper personal hygiene and to clean these devices on a regular basis
