Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examines the impact of practical activities on the academic achievement of Biology students in Kano State, Nigeria. A survey research design was adopted for the study, allowing for the collection of data from a sample population. The population of the study consisted of 2,929 Biology students and teachers, from which a sample size of 338 students and 15 teachers was selected using Krejcie and Morgan's sample size determination table. A structured questionnaire was used as the research instrument, divided into four sections: Section A covered demographic information, Section B focused on the types of practical activities students engage in, and Section C examined the impact of practical activities on academic performance and Section D analyze gender differences in achievement in Biology practical. The instrument was validated by experts in science education to ensure its content accuracy and reliability. The findings revealed that microscopic observations and project-based learning were the most common practical activities, with laboratory experiments also widely recognized. Additionally, students who actively participated in practical activities demonstrated improved academic performance, increased interest in Biology, and greater confidence in answering examination questions. However, gender disparities were observed, with male students reported to be more actively involved in practical sessions, although female students were found to perform equally well in Biology tests after participating in practical activities. Based on these findings, the study recommends the integration of technology in Biology practical, the promotion of gender-inclusive participation, and the alignment of practical activities with theoretical lessons to maximize learning outcomes. The study contributes to the field of science education by highlighting the critical role of practical activities in fostering students' academic success and engagement with Biology, thereby offering valuable insights for educators, policymakers, and school administrators.
