Instructional Problems Associated With Students Poor Performance in English Language Among Secondary School in Orumba South Local Government Area

Abstract
ABSTRACT The study investigated the instructional problems associated with students poor performance in English language among Secondary School Students in Orumba South LGA of Anambra State. The purpose of the study was to find out the instructional problems associated with students poor performance in English language. Three research questions guided the study. Descriptive survey research design was employed in the study because it helps in collecting and analyzing data on issues as they exist. The study covered the ten (10) secondary schools in Orumba South Local Government Area, Anambra State. The population of the study comprises all the senior secondary school students (SS 2) in Orumba South Local Government Area, Anambra State. Ten(10) schools were purposively selected out of the fifteen (15) schools in the Area of study using multi-staged sampling technique and 15 English teachers from the fifteen (15) secondary school. The instrument used was questionnaire designed to elicit responses on the subject of study. The instrument was subjected to face validation by two lecturers in the Department of Educational Foundations. Data collection was done personally by the researchers with the help of a research assistant. Copies of the questionnaire were distributed and collected on the spot. This is to ensure adequate return rate. The items were analyzed using a 4-point Likert scale. Data were collected and analyzed using mean. The result of the findings revealed that poor teaching methodology pose problems in instructions while teaching English Language, and lack of instructional materials also contribute to poor performance of students in English Language. It is recommended among others that teachers should be committed to use available instructional materials effectively, school administrators should ensure the availability of adequate instructional materials and provide a conducive learning environment, The Ministry should allocate sufficient resources to schools for the procurement of instructional materials.
