Students' Enrollment in Literature-in-English in Ssce in Senior Secondary Schools in Oredo Local Government Area, Edo State

Abstract
ABSTRACT The study examined students' enrollment in Literature-in-English in SSCE in secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area, Edo State. The study specifically was carried out to examine the number, sex and school type distribution of students enrolled for Literature-in-English in the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) in Oredo Local Government Area from 2022/2023 academic year, assess the factors do senior secondary school students identify as influencing their decision to enroll for Literature-in-English in the Senior School Certificate Examination, determine whether there is any difference in the factors senior secondary school students identify as influencing their decision to enroll for Literature-in-English in the Senior School Certificate Examination based on sex, determine whether there is any difference in the factors senior secondary school students identify as influencing their decision to enroll for Literature-in-English in the Senior School Certificate Examination based on school type, and determine whether there is any difference in the factors senior secondary school students identify as influencing their decision to enroll for Literature-in-English in the Senior School Certificate Examination based on early exposure to Literature-in-English. The study adopted a survey research design, responses were obtained from senior secondary school students in Oredo Local Government Area. Using the Taro Yame formula, the researcher sampled 400 participants as the sample size for the study. A total 348 self-structure questionnaire was issued to the participant, and 348 were validated for the study. All responses received were presented in tables and analyzed in frequencies and mean scores using statistical package for social science (SPSS v.23). Findings of the study reveals there is a low enrollment in Literature- in- English in SSCE among secondary school students in Oredo Local Government Area. The study further shows that the major factors which influences students decision to enroll for Literature-in-English in the Senior School Certificate Examination includes; genuine interest and passion, academic goals and aspirations, career path, subject combination requirements, peer influence, and perceived difficulty or relevance. The study among others recommends that educational authorities should enhance the Literature-in-English curriculum to make it more engaging and relevant to students' interests and future careers. This can include incorporating contemporary literary works, diverse genres, and interactive teaching methods.
