Abstract

ABSTRACT Medicinal plants are natural products reservoirs that contain phytochemicals with wound healing potentials. This study investigates the phytochemical composition and therapeutic potential of Monoon longifolium seed extracts, focusing on their effects on Albino Wistar rats. Qualitative Phytochemical analysis was conducted to identify bioactive compounds such as alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and phenolics, which are known for their medicinal properties. The extracts were prepared using solvent extraction techniques and subjected to qualitative and quantitative assays. To evaluate the healing potential, Albino Wistar rats were used as the animal model, they were randomly divided into four (4) groups of three (3) rats each. Group one (1) been the control group were Wounded and not treated, group 2 were wounded(sterile) and treated tropically with Cicatrin powder, seed paste and seed extract daily respectively, group 3 were induced with Staphylococcus aerus and treated tropically with Cicatrin powder, seed paste and seed extracts daily respectively, group 4 was feed with the crushed seed mixed in rat feed, and treated daily with Cicatrin powder, seed paste and seed extracts. Wound healing and anti-inflammatory activities were assessed by inducing controlled wounds and administering the seed extracts topically and seedfeed. Parameters such as wound contraction rate, and histopathological analysis were measured. The histopathological results shows that Monoon longifolium seed extract may have toxicological effect on the skin tissues and organs even while showing wound healing effects on the skin surface and this signifies that the seed extract is very harmful for wound healing treatment. Therefore, Further research is needed to identify active compounds and optimize therapeutic formulations of the plant seed.
