Abstract
ABSTRACTThis study evaluates the physicochemical properties of groundwater in Maiduguri. Barno Sture.to determine its suitability for human consumption hased on World Health Organizarion (I/10)standards. Groundwater samples were collected from three locations: Damboa Roud. JiddariPolo, and High Court Polo, and analyzed for physical, chemical, and heavy metal parametersThe physical parameters, including colour which all the were colourless, turbidity far all the threesamples are 3.00ahs, and odour for all the three sample are odouriess, conformed to WITOstandards The pH levels for Damhoa road, Jiddari Polo, and High Court Polo (7 26 6.89 and6.89) respectively, which were within the acceptable range of 6.5-85, indicating near-neutralwater quality. Chemical analysis of showed dissolved oxygen (DO) levels of Dumhon roadJadari Polo, and High Court Polo (8.772 mg/L. 6.96 mg/land 9.072 mg lJ respecterexceeding the minimum WHO standard of 6 mg L. Chemical oxygen demand (COD, for Dumfoaroad, Jiddari Polo, and High Court Polo (498, 41. and 43.6) respectively. Buchener overdemand (BOD) for Damhoa road. Jiddari Polo and High Court Polo are (00033 00071 and0.0043) respectively, electrical conductivity (EC) of Damboa road, Jiddure Polo and Jngh CourPolo are (364, 270 and 205) respectively, and total dissolved solids (TDS) for all the threelocations Damboa road, Jiddari Polo, and High Court Polo are (1.002. 2.09 and 3.0%)respectively, also met the standard limits, except for a slightly elevated TDS in one sample 11:002mg/L against a 1000 mg/L limit). Heavy metal analysis revealed cadmium for Dambou roudTiddari Polo, and High Court Polo were 1.083. 0558 and 0.004) respectivel the & upeer « w efor Damboa road. Jiddari Polo, and High Court Polo are (0.001.0.002 and 0.0tty respectivelythe concentration of chromium for Damboa road. Jiddari Polo, and High Court Polo are (0 /3%0.016, and 9.021) and the concentration o f Lead (Pb) for Damboa road, Jiddari Polo, and HighCourt Polo are (0.161, 0.100 and 0.045) respectively, which are within acceptable limits Leadlevels in Dambou Road (0./38 mg L ) exceeded the WO permissible limit o f 0.02 mg ruistingconcerns about potential health risks. Nickel concentrations ranged from 0.045 to 0/6/ mg lwith one sample slightly exceeding the standard value of 0.07 mg/L. Based on the results obtainedthe study recommended that, the public should be enlightened on the importance of icallydrinking water and the effects of some heavy metals which could be found in some water sourceslike lead which causes a serious health impact the public should he enlighiened o n the necenallow debris and other particles t o settle down a t the bottom o f the water container before ase andthe community should h e encouraged t o adopt the use o f simple water purification technology suchas the use of local plant Moringa Olifera
