Abstract

Social Studies Education plays a crucial role in fostering cultural awareness and understanding, especially in multicultural societies like Ibadan South East, Oyo State. This study examines the effectiveness of Social Studies Education in promoting cultural awareness among secondary school students, the role it plays in fostering cultural tolerance, the challenges faced by teachers and schools in implementing culturally inclusive lessons, and the strategies that can be employed to enhance its impact. The research employs a survey research design, utilizing a structured questionnaire to collect data from 200 secondary school students and 20 Social Studies teachers selected through random sampling. The questionnaire consists of two sections: Section A gathers demographic information, while Section B assesses participants' perceptions of Social Studies Education in relation to cultural awareness and understanding. Findings from this study are expected to provide insights into the extent to which Social Studies Education has contributed to fostering cultural tolerance among students. It will also identify the major challenges educators face, such as limited resources, lack of teacher training, and cultural biases among students. Additionally, the study will explore practical strategies, including the use of interactive activities, multimedia resources, guest speakers, and professional development programs for teachers, to improve the teaching and learning of cultural awareness in Social Studies. The significance of this study extends to policymakers, educators, students, and society at large. Policymakers may use the findings to strengthen curriculum policies that enhance cultural education, while educators will benefit from recommendations on effective teaching strategies. Students will gain a better understanding of cultural diversity, leading to improved social cohesion, and the broader society will benefit from increased tolerance and respect for different cultural groups. This study contributes to the existing body of knowledge by providing empirical evidence on the role of Social Studies Education in promoting cultural awareness and understanding. The results will serve as a guide for curriculum developers, school administrators, and policymakers in making informed decisions to improve Social Studies Education in secondary schools, ultimately fostering national unity and social harmony.
