Evaluating the Effect of Black Soldier Fly Supplemented Feed on the Growth Performance and Hematology of Noiler Birds

This study evaluated the effect of black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) supplemented feed on the growth performance and heamatology of noiler birds. A total of eighteen (18) one week old birds were used for study. The birds were divided into three groups. Group A received feed with 25% BSFL inclusion, Group B with 50% BSFL inclusion, and a control group fed with conventional feed. The birds were acclimatized for two week after which the treatment commenced and lasted for three week during which the individual weight of the birds and the left over feed were taken. At the end of the sixth week, blood samples were collected from the birds. Data obtained were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23. Descriptive statistics, the mean and standard errors of the mean was calculated for every group. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to test for significant differences between the experimental and control groups at 0.05 significant levels. Significant ANOVA was followed by Tukey’s HSD multiple comparison test. The results revealed that birds fed BSFL-supplemented diets showed significant improvements in weight gain and feed conversion efficiency. Birds in Group B (50% BSFL) achieved the highest average weight gain, significantly outperforming both Group A and the control group, with improved feed conversion ratio indicating better feed utilization. Additionally, the feed intake in the BSFL-supplemented groups was higher, suggesting enhanced palatability and nutritional benefits. Haematological analysis also indicated that the birds on BSFL feed had more stable PCV and WBC values, suggesting enhanced immune function and overall health. These findings highlight the potential of BSFL as a sustainable and nutritious protein source in poultry diets, offering benefits in both growth performance and health.
