Abstract

This work is aimed at determining the incidence of Salmonella and Escherichia coli in livestock poultry feeds. A total number of ten (10) sample feed were obtained from commercial mash operation/ pellet mill operation at Sabon Gari Kano and Kwari main Market Kano. . All the feed samples were cultured on separate media which include eosin methylene blue (EMB), Salmonella- Shigella Agar (SSA) media using standard procedures. The samples were screened for total aerobic bacteria count, total coliform count and the characterization of the bacteria isolates where carried out, while indole test and citrate, methyl red(mr)- voges prokauve (vp) test, carbohydrate fermentation by triple sugar iron agar (TSI) test were used to confirm the presence of Escherichia coli and Salmonella. The confirmation of salmonella isolates on Sallmonella-Shigella (SSA) agar was also done. The total aerobic bacteria count was found to be high in this study which has a range of to 5.4x106 to 3.3×107 cfu/g and Coliform count in the poultry feeds range between 5.0x105 to 1.1 x107 cfu/g.
