Abstract
Due to technological advancement in data processing technology, information communication technology, and the internet ervade all human endeavours. The emergence of cybercrime in Nigeria has been aided by the fact that it needs little to no resources to begin with and that it can be carried out in countless locations without any geographical constraint. Thus, two research questions were raised: Has the measures used by the EFCC in handling cybercrime related offenses helped in combating internet fraud in Nigeria?, Has the collaboration between EFCC and other agencies helped in the arrest of online criminals in Nigeria?. This study anchored on deterrence theory as espoused by Cesare Beccaria as theoretical framework of analysis, The paper also adopts the time series research design, documentary method of data collection and content analysis method of data analysis. Based on the research questions, we found out that the the rise of internet fraud commonly referred to as "Yahoo-Yahoo", has posed a significant challenge to Nigeria's economic and social development over the past several years. However the study also highlights the challenges faced by the EFCC, including limited resources, inadequacy and ineffectiveness, collecting Bribes from cybercrime suspects, lack of integrity in carrying out cybercrime cases, not punishing perpetrators of cybercrimes, etc. The research further explores the agency's collaboration with domestic and international partners, public awareness campaigns, and capacitybuilding initiatives. The study contributes to the understanding of the EFCC's role in addressing internet fraud and based on this findings the following recommendations were made: There is need for more analytical and technical or technological capabilities in order to curb cybercrime to be able to detect and analyze cyber-attacks. As cybercrime is an act defined involving electronic operations which includes interception of IP addresses, stepping up of tactical activities on cyberspace has become important, By emphasizing a comprehensive, non-violent approach, the EFCC should demonstrate its commitment to the rule of law, build public trust, and ensure that its fight against internet fraud is carried out in a manner that respects the rights and dignity of all citizens.
