Abstract

This research work examined the effect of Nigerian Pidgin English on the academic performance of students in Auchi Polytechnic, Auchi. Pidgin English is a marginal language that arises to fulfill certain communication needs among people who have no common language. To achieve this aim, four research questions were raised. The simple random sampling technique was adopted, and a closed-ended questionnaire was used to elicit data from a sample size of 132 students of the Office Technology and Management Department, Auchi Polytechnic, Auchi. The analysis of the data was carried out using frequency, percentages, and tables. The study shows that students frequently use Pidgin English in their daily communication. The study concludes that there are factors that enhance this issue, such as the home background of students, peer group influence, and students’ nonchalant attitude towards the English Language as a subject. It was recommended, among others, that there should be constant monitoring and evaluation of the language used in teaching and learning in tertiary institutions.
