Abstract

Due to the phytochemical content of Andrographis paniculata (AP), it is believed to have some medicinal properties and antioxidant activity. The purpose of this project research was to determine the anti-diabetic properties and some liver enzyme activities in streptozotocin-induced rats administered ethanol extract of Andrographis paniculata. A total of 17 rats (120-175g) were purchased and randomly divided into 3 groups; Groups 1, 2, and 3 which contained 5, 7, and 5 rats respectively. Group 1 was the normal control (NC), and rats in this group received only normal feed and were not made diabetic by streptozotocin induction. Group 2 (Diabetic control or SI Only) contained streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats that were not administered the Andrographis paniculata extract, while Group 3 (Diabetic treated or SI + AP) contained streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats that were administered the Andrographis paniculata extract for 14 days. In this investigation, the results showed that there was a significant increase in the enzyme activity of the Andrographis paniculata treated group when compared to NC. The observations from this investigation show that the ethanol extract of Andrographis paniculata has no toxicity effect, can reduce the elevated glucose level thereby having a positive effect on diabetes, and increases the antioxidants and liver enzyme activities in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.
