Analysis of Power Flow in a Single-Phase Transformer Mimic Panel

ABSTRACT This project addresses the growing demand for accurate simulation tools in response to the increasing complexity of power systems and stringent operational requirements. Recent advancements in materials, digital control systems, and monitoring technologies have greatly improved the functionality of transformer mimic panels. This report explores these innovations, highlighting the advantages of modern materials for greater durability and precision, as well as the use of advanced digital controls for enhanced simulation accuracy. It delves into the critical design aspects of a transformer mimic panel, such as winding layouts, connection points, and protective devices. Additionally, the report covers the development of a single-phase transformer trainer, designed as an interactive educational tool. The trainer supports buffer, step-up, and step- down configurations, enabling various experiments to assess performance under different load conditions. Key components include a manually rewound 500VA transformer, analog voltmeter and ammeter, probe connectors, toggle switches, and an overload protection system. The trainer was constructed with careful machining and assembly on an Aluminum Composite Panel (ACP) and a wooden frame. Testing under no-load, short-circuit, and load conditions revealed performance challenges with the hand-wound transformer, but the trainer successfully demonstrated key transformer concepts. Recommendations for improvement include using professionally wound transformers and increasing measurement accuracy.
