Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigates the impact of TikTok usage on the academic performance of students at Osun State Polytechnic, Iree. With the rapid rise of social media platforms, TikTok has emerged as a popular medium for entertainment and information sharing among students. Using literature analysis that focuses on the development of TikTok in the The investigation was guided with different theories use which are Media System Dependency Theory, the Uses and Gratifications Theory and Social Cognitive Theory, the research study Employing a survey research design, the study sampled 150 students across all department in different levels in the institution. The findings reveal a significant correlation between excessive TikTok engagement and decreased academic performance, particularly in areas of concentration and time management. Students reported that while TikTok serves as a source of relaxation and creativity. it's addictive nature often leads to procrastination and reduced study time. Conversely, some participants noted that educational content on TikTok could enhance learning experiences if consumed in moderation. The study concludes that while TikTok offers benefits and drawbacks, its predominant influence tends to be detrimental to the academic success of students at Osun use and academic State Polytechnic. Recommendations for balancing social media responsibilities are proposed to mitigate negative effects. Key words: Effect, Tiktok, Academic Performance and Osun State Polytechnic Students
