Comparative Analysis of the Microbial Content of Different Brands of Sachet Water Consumed Within Ikere Metropolis, Ekiti State, Nigeria

Abstract

The study was conducted to carry out the comparative analysis of the microbial content of different brands of sachet water consumed within Ikere metropolis, Ekiti state, Nigeria. A total of five (5) sachet water were collected from different locations in Ikere-Ekiti such as Hezik water, Saruch water, Ola John water, Eldan water, and Kollege water. The organisms isolated were further characterized using standard procedures. The result of the study revealed that most of the sachet water were grossly contaminated with bacteria pathogens such as Bacillius subtilis, Pseudomonas spp., Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi. The bacteria count ranged from ( 0.7 to 1.8 x104 cfu/ml). Saruch water had the highest bacteria count of 1.8 x104 while Eldan water had the lowest count of 0.7 x104. The findings highlight the need for improved water treatment, stricter regulatory enforcement, and regular microbial testing to ensure safe drinking water. Addressing these issues is essential for protecting public health in this region and water producers should improve hygiene practices during packaging and distribution to prevent post-treatment contamination.
