Abstract
ABSTRACT This study examines the pragmatic elements in the Nigerian film Òlòtūré, with a focus on how language use reflects socio-cultural realities, conveys implicit meanings, and drives the narrative. Adopting Speech Act Theory, Politeness Theory, and Relevance Theory as its theoretical framework, the research analyzes the dialogues and non-verbal communication in the film to explore the interplay between language, power, and societal dynamics. Findings reveal that Òlòtūré employs assertives, directives, commissives, and expressives to depict themes such as manipulation, resilience, and societal inequalities. Politeness strategies, including face-threatening and face-saving acts, underscore the hierarchical relationships and survival tactics of the characters, while implicit cues engage the audience in inferential meaning-making, enhancing the film’s depth. The socio-cultural context of Òlòtūré highlights its authenticity and mirrors the linguistic diversity of Nigeria, showcasing how language mediates power and identity. This research contributes to the understanding of cinematic discourse as a tool for storytelling, cultural preservation, and advocacy. It underscores the potential of Nigerian films to merge artistic expression with socio-political critique, calling for further exploration of pragmatics in cinematic narratives.
