Effects of Parental Background on Academic Performance of Students in Some Selected Secondary Schools in Ondo West Local Government Area of Ondo State.

ABSTRACT
This study therefore investigated the effects of parental background on academic performance of students. The population of the study comprises of 100 students, which were randomly selected from five secondary schools in Ondo West Local Government Area of Ondo State. The instrument used was a questionnaire, which was designed by the Researcher. Data collected were analysed with the use of simple percentage and mean ranking. From the four research questions raised to guide the study, it was discovered that parents whose have high level of qualification get involve in their children’ education compared with children whose parents have lesser degree. Based on the findings, the researcher affirmed that many parent attitude influence students’s academic performance. It was also affirmed that family that have socio-economic status tend to be more successful in preparing their children for school because they normally have access to various tools quality childcare , books and various learning activities at home and it also revealed that family type affect the academic performance of the students. The study therefore recommended that school administrators in Ondo West Local Government needs to come up with strategies which are geared towards identifying the various backgrounds of different students in their schools, school administrators should also organize for functions and ensure that all the parents get to attend, parents as well on the other hand to be encouraged in participating in the education of their children and also need for guidance and counseling processes to be introduced in Ondo West Local Government Area of Ondo State.
