Abstract
The microbiological quality of drinking water is essential for public health, particularly in academic institutions where large populations rely on shared water sources. This study assessed the microbiological quality of drinking water in BOUESTI. Water samples were collected from hostel tap water and borehole within the university. Standard microbiological analysis was conducted to determine the presence of total coliforms and Eschericia coli. The results revealed that untreated water tanks had high levels of microbial contamination, with total coliform counts ranging from 6 to 12 CFU/100mL and detection of E. coli in several samples. Borehole and treated tap water showed minimal to no contamination, meeting the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for drinking water quality. However, untreated water sources are potential health risks to the university community. Therfore there is a need for regular water treatment, quality monitoring and public awareness campaigns for safe water consumption practices.
