Abstract

This study investigates the impact of leadership styles on employee motivation at Guarantee Trust Bank (GTBank) in Sokoto State. The study specifically examines the effects of autocratic, democratic, and transformational leadership styles on employee motivation within the organization. Using a descriptive research design, data were collected through a structured questionnaire administered to 129 employees of the bank. The analysis was carried out using Chi-square tests to evaluate the relationships between leadership styles and employee motivation. The findings reveal that transformational leadership has a positive and significant impact on employee motivation, with employees under transformational leadership showing higher levels of motivation. In contrast, autocratic leadership was found to have a negative effect on employee motivation, with employees under autocratic leadership reporting lower motivation levels. Democratic leadership, while somewhat effective, showed mixed results, indicating that it does not have a consistent impact on employee motivation across all employees. The study concludes that leadership styles significantly influence employee motivation, with transformational leadership being the most effective in fostering a motivated workforce. Based on these findings, the study recommends that organizations prioritize transformational leadership training for their managers and adopt a more flexible, situational leadership approach that aligns with employees' preferences and needs.
