Socio Cultural Determinants of the Influence of Parents on the Career Choice of Their Children and the Impact on the Development of Children in Abakiliki, Ebonyi State

ABSTRACT
This study examined the complex social, cultural, and psychological factors shaping parental influence on childrens career choices. The study aimed to understand how these influences affect career satisfaction, autonomy, and personal growth among children, with specific emphasis on social and cultural factors, the extent to which parents consider their childrens skills and interests, the impact of parental career decisions on childrens development, and effective strategies for career guidance. Using a descriptive survey research design, data were collected from a sample of 375 respondents in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, using a structured questionnaire. The findings revealed that socio-economic status, family background, and peer influences significantly impact parental career recommendations, with many parents balancing economic viability and societal expectations. Cultural traditions, family values, and gender norms emerged as pivotal cultural determinants, illustrating how deeply embedded cultural frameworks continue to shape career expectations, often encouraging children to pursue conventional or prestigious professions. Additionally, while parents prioritize economic stability, many are increasingly attuned to the importance of recognizing their childrens skills and interests. The study also highlighted the dual effect of parental influence on development: when supportive, it enhances confidence and autonomy, yet excessive parental pressure can lead to career dissatisfaction and limit childrens career potential. Effective guidance strategies, such as open communication, allowing exploration, and respecting childrens autonomy, were identified as essential to fostering healthy career decision-making. Based on these findings, the study recommends that parents maintain a balanced approach that promotes open dialogue, enables exploration, respects childrens unique abilities, and integrates cultural sensitivity with modern career expectations.
