Abstract
This study investigated the effects of Parquetina nigrescens (Ewe Ogbo) extracts on aluminum chloride-induced toxicity in male Wistar rats. The research evaluated both methanol and ethyl acetate extracts of P. nigrescens for their potential neuroprotective, antioxidant, and metabolic effects. Phytochemical screening revealed that the methanol extract contained higher concentrations of bioactive compounds, particularly saponins and steroids, compared 1o the ethyl acetate extract. The study utilized different treatment groups, including a normal control, aluminum chloride disease control, standard drug (Donepezil Hydrochloride) group, and varying doses (100mg/kg and 200mg/kg body weight) of both methanol and ethyl acetate extracts. Cognitive function was assessed through behavioral tests, while oxidative stress markers (MDA, GSH, GPX, GSSG) and liver function parameters (LDH, SDH) were evaluated.
Results showed that the methanol extract, particularly at 200mg/kg body weight, demonstrated significant improvement in cognitive function and memory, comparable to the standard drug.
The extract also effectively modulated oxidative stress markers in both brain and liver tissues, with the methanol extract showing superior effects compared to the ethyl acetate extract.
