Sociolinguistic Analysis of Pastor W.f Kumuyi's Gck Programme

This study, titled "A Sociolinguistic Analysis of Pastor W.F. Kumuyi's Global Crusade with Kumuyi (GCK) Program," explores the linguistic strategies and sociocultural dynamics embedded in the discourse of one of the most influential Christian evangelistic programs in Nigeria and beyond. Drawing on the theoretical framework of Speech Act Theory and Sociocultural Linguistics, the study examines how language is employed to achieve specific communicative goals, such as persuasion, spiritual edification, and community building, within the GCK program.
The research adopts a qualitative methodology, combining discourse analysis and participant observation. Sermons, prayers, and exhortations delivered by Pastor Kumuyi during the crusades are analyzed for their pragmatic functions, stylistic features, and sociolinguistic relevance. In addition, interviews with attendees and stakeholders provide insights into the reception and interpretation of the messages within diverse sociocultural contexts.
The findings reveal that Pastor Kumuyi employs a distinct linguistic style characterized by the use of inclusive language, scriptural references, and culturally resonant metaphors. His discourse integrates elements of Nigerian Pidgin, English, and indigenous languages, enhancing accessibility and resonance among a multilingual audience. The analysis also highlights the strategic use of speech acts such as directives, commissives, and expressives to foster engagement, commitment, and a shared sense of purpose among participants.
The study contributes to sociolinguistic scholarship by providing a nuanced understanding of how religious discourse operates as a tool for cultural transmission, identity formation, and societal transformation. It underscores the interplay between language, religion, and social cohesion in a globalized yet locally contextualized evangelistic initiative. This work further enriches the discourse on the sociolinguistics of religion, offering valuable insights for scholars, religious leaders, and practitioners in the field of communication and cultural studies.
