Abstract

The study investigates the impact of creative writing skills on the academic performance of undergraduate students at Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology, Ikere (BOUESTI). Three (3) research questions were raised to guide the study. The study adopted a descriptive research design of survey type. A sample representation of one hundred (100) respondents was used for the study. Fifty (50) students were randomly selected and sampled from 300-level students, and fifty (50) students were randomly sampled from 400-level students across various departments, making a total of one hundred (100) students. The instruments for the study were a Creative Writing questionnaire and an Interview. The Creative Writing questionnaire was graded to assess the creative writing ability of the students, and was analysed using Mean and Standard Deviation. The questionnaire items were analysed using simple frequency count, percentage and weighted mean. The study established that that students’ creative writing skills have helped them perform better in their courses, improved their ability to write academic essays in subjects outside the arts. The study concludes that a structured approach to embedding creative writing programs, workshops, and assessments in BOUESTI’s academic framework will significantly contribute to the holistic development of students. By fostering a culture that values creativity and expression, the university can prepare its undergraduates to succeed academically and thrive in their future careers.
