Impact of Social Media on Secondary School Student Attitude Towards Education in Ilorin South Local Government Area Kwara State.

ABSTRACT
This study investigated impact of social media on secondary school students’ attitude
towards education in Ilorin South Local Government Area, Kwara State.
This research was a descriptive research of the correlational type. The population for this
study Comprises of all private and public schools in Ilorin South Kwara State. This study
targeted 30 students each in (10) selected secondary schools. 300 students were sampled
using simple random sampling technique. Data was collected for the study using
Researcher-designed questionnaire. Descriptive Statistics of Percentage was used to
answer research question 1 and 2. Research Question 3 was converted into hypothesis and
test vs PPMC was used at 0.05 level of Significance.
Findings revealed that the level of social media use among secondary school students in
Kwara State is relatively high. Furthermore, a significant portion of students have a
positive outlook on education, a substantial number remain indifferent, and a smaller yet
notable fraction holds negative views. Finally, there is no significant relationship between
social media use and senior secondary school students’ attitude in Ilorin South Local
Government Area, Kwara State.
The following recommendations were made based on the findings of this study. Kwara
State Government should implement educational programs or workshops for students on
responsible social media use and its potential impact on academic performance and
mental health. School authorities should consider mentorship programs or motivational
talks to help them connect with their education for students with negative views, while for
indifferent students, school authorities should introduce engaging and interactive learning
experiences to spark their interest. Lastly, students should create strategies to balance
social media use with educational activities, perhaps by incorporating technology in a way
that enhances learning rather than detracting from it.
