Abstract

The abstract discioses a study aimed at understanding how print media can help combat drug abuse among students at Bamidele Olumilua University of Science. Technology, and Edication (BOUESTI) in Ikere-Ekiti. Nigeria. Recognizing the rising issue of drug abuse among young people especially in educational settings, the study examines the potential of print media to raise awareness and shape attitudes against drug use. It employs a mixed-methods approach, combining surveys and interviews, to evaluate students awareness of drug-related dangers, their perceptions of print media's effectiveness, and the extent of drug-related content in campus print media The research is grounded in three theoretical frameworks Social Responsibility Theory This theory underscores the media's moral obligation to inform society about critical issues. The study argues that print media has a duty to educate students about the dangers of drug abuse, thereby empowering them to make informed choices Uses and Gratifications Theory This perspective highlights the reasons students engage with print media, such as seeking educational content and fulfilling their need for awareness about pressing health concerns like drug abuse Health Belief Model (HBM) This model explains how print media can shape students' health-related beliefs. It emphasizes factors such as perceived risk, severity, and benefits of action, which are crucial in motivating students to adopt healthier behaviors The findings reveal a significant lack of awareness among students about the dangers of drug abuse, despite the trustworthiness of print media as an information source The study identifies various challenges faced by print media, including declining readership and competition from digital platforms However it also highlights opportunities for print media to work with educational institutions to create effective campaigns aimed at drug abuse prevention. Ultimately, the research emphasizes the importance of print media in contemporary health advocacy By adopting targeted and collaborative strategies, print media can play a vital role in fostering a drug-free campus environment. This study contributes to broader discussions on the role of traditional media in addressing modern societal issues, offering practical recommendations for enhancing its impact in educational contexts.
