Abstract
ABSTRACT
Water, the source of all life, is the most crucial element in our ecosystem for all animals, plants, insects, and humans. However, various hazardous chemicals resulting from human activities couple with inadequate wastewater treatment pollute natural water resources. Dye is constituted significant hazards in water pollution; these are Carcinogenic, diarrhea, vomiting and must be decontaminated before discharge into natural water bodies. Carbon dot was successfully synthesized using sawdust, its performance was tested on degradation methyl blue, carbon dot synthesized in this study shows efficiency of 92% for sample A, 98% for sample B, 18% for sample C and 68% for sample D. The following method of synthesizing carbon dot was studied; carbonization (sample A), carbonization plus oxidation (sample B), non-carbonization sawdust (sample C) and non-carbonization plus oxidation (sample D). The result obtained in this study shows carbonization affect the performance of carbon dot as sample A and B shows 92% and 98% degradation efficiency over sample C and D with 18% and 68% efficient. Similarly, the result shows that addition of oxidizing agent during synthesis improves the efficiency of carbon dot as sample B and D shows efficiency of 98% and 68% over sample A and C with efficiency of 92% and 18%. Kinetic data generated for sample A was found to be 0.0173min-1, sample B was found to be 0.0275min-1, sample C was found to be 0.0013min-1 and sample D was found to be 0.0082min-1. These values conform with other values reported by other authors; Shadi et. al. 2021 and Shuaib et. al. 2022.
In conclusion, carbon dot is found to be effective in methyl blue removed and can be adopted for industrial uses.
