Antioxidant Potentials and Antibacterial Investigation of Ethanol Extract of Maytenus Senegalensis Leaves.

Abstract
The present study aimed to investigate the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of the ethanol extract of the leaves of Maytenus senegalensis, a medicinal plant widely used in traditional African medicine. The total phenol content starts at 28.461.07 mg GAE/g at 100 ug/mL and rises to 35.2#0.29 mg GAE/g at 300 g/mL and the total Flavonoids contents at
100 Mg/mL is 31.85$0.20 mg QUE/g, increasing at
46.12#0.89 mg QUE/g at 300ug/mL. Both phenol and flavonoids content show a clear concentration dependent increase, indicating the higer extract concentration provide more antioxidants. The antioxidant activity of the ethanol extract of Maytenus senegalensis leaves was evaluated using the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-dicrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), nitric oxide(NO) and iron chelating assayat three different concentrations (100, 200, and 300 ug/mL). The antibacterial activity was assessed against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains using the disc diffusion and broth microdilution methods. The FRAP assay demonstrated a concentration-dependent increase in the reducing power of the extract, indicating its ability to donate electrons. The total phenolic content was found to be 92.15 # 4.08 mg gallic acid equivalent per gram of the extract. The antibacterial screening revealed that the ethanol extract was effective against both Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa) bacterial strains. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values ranged from 16 to 64 ug/mL, suggesting the potent antibacterial activity of the extract.The results of this study indicate that the ethanol extract of Maytenus senegalensis leaves possesses significant antioxidant and antibacterial properties, which may contribute to its traditional medicinal uses.
