Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study presents a comprehensive appraisal of the experiences, challenges, and contributions of career women in the Quantity Surveying profession, with a focus on Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, Nigeria. Despite the growing presence of women in the profession, Quantity Surveying remains male-dominated profession, often characterized by gender disparities and work-life balance challenges. The study was guided by four key objectives: to examine the experiences of women in the profession, assess their contributions, identify barriers to career advancement, and evaluate existing initiatives supporting gender diversity. Data was collected through structured questionnaires and face-to-face interviews with professional Quantity Surveyors, lecturers, and students. The study employed a stratified sampling technique to ensure representation across different sub-groups, and both primary and secondary data sources were utilized. The instrument for data analysis consisted of descriptive statistical tools such as frequency tables and charts, which helped to identify key patterns in the responses. The results revealed that 60% of respondents had experienced gender bias or discrimination in their workplaces. Additionally, only 30% of respondents had access to mentorship opportunities, and 60% were dissatisfied with the available career advancement options. Despite these challenges, 85% of participants acknowledged the significant contributions of women to the profession. The study also found that existing policies and initiatives aimed at supporting women were only partially effective, with 50% of respondents observing positive changes due to these programs. Based on the findings, the study recommends the implementation of formal mentorship programs, gender bias training, and flexible work arrangements to promote gender diversity and inclusivity in the Quantity Surveying profession.
