ABSTRACT
This study investigated the impact of single parenthood on the academic performance of primary school pupils in Wamakko Local Government Area, Sokoto State, Nigeria. It examined how single-parent households, often resulting from divorce, death, separation, or abandonment, affect children's educational outcomes, as well as the social and economic challenges these families face. Previous researches indicate that children from single-parent homes may experience academic, emotional, and behavioral issues, alongside social stigmatization and economic disadvantages, which may impact their ability to perform well in school. The instruments used in this study were questionnaires administered to 200 respondents, with 182 completed questionnaires retrieved for analysis. Results reveal that pupils from single-parent households often face unique academic challenges compared to those with both parents. Findings suggested that a significant proportion of children from single-parent homes encounter financial difficulties, leading to delays in school fee payments and less time for academic pursuits. school performance. The study concluded that while single-parent children may achieve academic success, they face more obstacles than those from two-parent families. It recommends providing support systems for single-parent families to mitigate these academic disadvantages. Additionally, these children often lack guidance from elders in academic or career matters and spend less quality time with their parent(s), impacting their behavior and school performance.
