Abstract
ABSTRACT
The aim of the present study was to investigate the phytochemical constituents and evaluate the antibacterial activity of Moringa oleifera leaf extracts, against Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi. The bioactive compounds are extracted from M. oleifera leaves by using solvents, ethanol and water. The qualitative phytochemical analysis of M. oleifera leaves were carried out using standard procedures to identify the constituents of bioactive compounds (Alkaloids. Flavonoids, Tannins, Saponnins, glycosides, Alkaloids and Phenols). The ethanol crude leaves extract were used to determine the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration on E. coli and S. typhi by using the method of Greenwood as well as the inhibitory zone. Results, this study showed that the extract is active against bacterial isolates, whereas the inhibitory effect of the isolate depends on concentration. Also, the sensitivity of the bacterial isolate to the ethanolic and aqueous extract differs whereas E. coli is more sensitive to the extract with zone of inhibition 9.0mm and 4.0mm while S typhi is less sensitive with zone of inhibition 7.0mm and 3.0mm respectively in comparison with a control.
