Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study explores the antimicrobial properties of Dogoyaro (Azadirachta indica) and Jack in the Bush (Chromolaena odorata) leaves, addressing the pressing issue of antibiotic resistance. The objective was to determine the photochemical constituents of each plant leaves extracts, evaluate the effectiveness of extracts from these plants, prepared with ethyl acetate and methanol, against common bacterial pathogens ; Staphylococcus aureus (Gram Positive), Bacillus cereus (Gram Positive), Escherichia coli (Gram Negative), and Enterobacter (Gram Negative). Using disc diffusion and well diffusion methods, the antimicrobial activity was assessed, with ciprofloxacin serving as a positive control. The results indicated that both plant extracts exhibited significant antimicrobial activity, with some extracts showing inhibition zones comparable to or larger than those produced by ciprofloxacin. These findings suggest that Azadirachta indica and Chromolaena odorata hold potential as sources of natural antimicrobial agents and warrant further investigation for their possible applications in combating antibiotic resistance.
