Abstract
The study investigates the gene flow and genetic differentiation of chicken growth
hormone (cGH) genes among tropically adapted Nigerian and exotic chicken breeds. The primary aim is to understand the genetic diversity and differentiation between these
breeds, which is crucial for improving their adaptability, performance, and potential for
selective breeding programs. The research was conducted using samples from various
Nigerian local breeds (FUNAAB Alpha, Noiler, Shika brown, Fulani ectotype) and exotic
breeds (Sasso, Kuroiler). Genetic data were retrieved from GenBank and analyzed using
tools for genetic differentiation analysis, gene flow estimates, linkage disequilibrium
(LD), and haplotype distribution. The analysis revealed moderate genetic differentiation
and substantial gene flow between Nigerian and exotic chicken breeds. Significant
haplotype diversity among the breeds. Genetic variations that could impact growth
performance and adaptability in different environments.
The findings emphasize the importance of genetic diversity for breeding programs and
conservation efforts. The genetic differentiation observed suggests that both Nigerian and
exotic breeds possess unique traits that can be harnessed to improve overall poultry
performance. The gene flow between the breeds indicates potential for cross-breeding
strategies to enhance adaptability and growth rates the study concludes that maintaining
genetic diversity is essential for sustainable poultry production. Selective breeding
programs should focus on leveraging the genetic strengths of both Nigerian and exotic
breeds to optimize growth performance and adaptability implement selective breeding
programs that utilize the genetic diversity of both Nigerian and exotic chicken breeds.
