Abstract
The study on the effects of Carica papaya leaf extract in ischemic/reperfusion injury on the brain
following Bilateral Common Carotid Artery Occlusion (BCCAO) in Wistar rats is important for
several reasons in which ischemic stroke remains a major cause of mortality and long-term
disability worldwide, with limited therapeutic options available (Wang et al., 2019). potential
neuroprotective agents, such as natural plant extracts, is crucial for developing new treatment
strategies (Alkuraishy et al., 2020).
Carica papaya is a widely available medicinal plant known for its antioxidant and anti-
inflammatory properties, which may mitigate oxidative stress and neuronal damage following
ischemia and reperfusion [Owolabi et al., 2020]. Exploring its effects could provide valuable insights into low-cost, accessible treatments for populations at high risk of ischemic injury,
particularly in resource-limited settings [Dey et al., 2021].
Wistar rats provide a reliable model for simulating human cerebrovascular conditions such as
ischemic stroke. Studying these effects in this animal model enhances the potential for translational
research, contributing to future clinical applications [Miyake et al., 2018]. This research aligns
with the growing scientific interest in integrating traditional medicinal practices with modern
biomedical research to address contemporary health challenges (Ghosh et al., 2017). The study's
findings could therefore have significant implications for the development of alternative therapies
for stroke management, improving the quality of life for patients and reducing the socioeconomic
burden of cerebrovascular diseases (Wu et al., 2018).
