Status of School Feeding Programme in Public Primary School in Obio/akpor Local Government Area

Abstract
School Feeding Programme constitutes intervention that has been introduced in many developed and developing countries in the world to address the issue of poverty, stimulate pupil enrollment, reduce absenteeism and improve food security at home. This study aimed to investigate the status of school feeding programmes in public primary schools in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design and obtained its data from primary sources. Data were collected using questionnaire and data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics, which included mean, standard deviation and t-test. The findings showed that the school feeding programmes in public primary does not exist and there is no implementation of the programme in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area. Furthermore, the study explored the challenges/barriers faced by school feeding programmes in public primary schools in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area with a strong agreement among teachers about the barriers impeding its success. The major constraints found were lack of budget for the programme and poor community engagement that hindered the establishment of an effective programme. It was therefore, recommended that Local Government should initiate and establish a monitoring framework to track the performance of school feeding programme in public primary schools in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area. The study therefore concludes that prospects of school feeding programme in public primary schools in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area include: enhance funding of the programme, development of robust infrastructure and foster collaboration between stakeholder, including local suppliers and community members.
