Abstract
Trypanosomiasis, also known as “sleeping sickness” in humans and “nagana” in animals, is a parasitic disease caused by Trypanosoma species and transmitted by the tsetse fly (Glossina) in sub-Saharan Africa. It kills around half a million people annually. The study explored natural plant extracts as potential treatments. The parasite Trypanosoma brucei brucei was introduced into albino rats to achieve high parasitemia. Methanolic extracts from the roots and leaves of four plants were tested in vitro at a 10 mg/ml concentration in a 96-well plate. Parasites were incubated in Dulbecco’s Modified Eagle’s Medium with supplements. All four plant extracts showed strong activity against the parasite. The promising plants were:Erythrina senegalensisTamarindus indicaEucalyptus citriodoraTerminalia avicenoidesThese extracts could be potential drug sources for treating trypanosomiasis.
