Abstract
Sexual harassment in universities is a pervasive issue that can disrupt students' academic and social experiences, leading to long-term impacts on mental health and academic achievement. This study examines the impact of sexual harassment on the mental health and academic performance of undergraduate students at the University of Port Harcourt. Using a mixed-methods approach, data was collected through surveys and interviews with students from various faculties. The findings highlight that students who have experienced sexual harassment report increased symptoms of psychological distress, including anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and post-traumatic stress. These mental health issues, in turn, negatively impact academic performance by lowering concentration, motivation, attendance, and overall academic engagement. Students frequently report feelings of shame, fear, and helplessness, which can lead to social isolation and avoidance of academic settings where they feel unsafe. The study also reveals that sexual harassment impacts both male and female students, although female students report a higher prevalence and more severe mental health impacts. Additionally, students who experience harassment from individuals in positions of authority, such as faculty members, may feel powerless to report incidents, compounding their distress and academic struggles. This study emphasizes the need for university administrations to implement comprehensive anti-harassment policies, establish confidential reporting channels, and provide mental health resources to support affected students. Ultimately, fostering a safe campus environment is essential to ensure students' well-being, academic success, and personal growth.
