Abstract
This study examines the impact of human resource management (HRM) on the performance of Nigerian commercial banks, using Eco Bank, Osogbo Branch, Osun State as a case study. The specific objectives of the study are to examine the relationship between human resource management practices and employee performance, to assess the extent to which training and development programs influence productivity and service delivery, and to evaluate the impact of compensation and reward systems on employee motivation and retention. The study is anchored on Human Capital Theory, Resource-Based View Theory, Social Exchange Theory, and Growth Theory, which collectively emphasize the importance of people as strategic assets for organizational success. The population of the study consists of 35 employees, while a sample size of 32 was selected for data collection and analysis. Findings from the study revealed a significant positive relationship between effective human resource management practices and employee performance. It also showed that regular training and development programs greatly enhance staff productivity and service quality, while fair and competitive compensation systems improve employee motivation, commitment, and retention. Based on these findings, the study concludes that well-implemented HRM practices are critical to improving organizational efficiency and sustaining competitiveness in the banking sector. The study therefore recommends that banks should invest continuously in staff training, adopt fair reward and compensation systems, and implement strategic HR policies that promote employee engagement and development to achieve better organizational performance
