Abstract
The study investigated the public perception of police activities and crime control among residents
of Ekwusigo L.G.A Anambra State Area. Police activities and crime control involve various
strategies and actions, including patrolling, investigations, community policing, crime prevention
programs, law enforcement, emergency response, surveillance, and traffic control, aimed at
preventing, detecting, and reducing criminal. The research aimed to describe observed police
activities for crime control in Ekwusigo Local Government Area, evaluate strategies adopted by
police as they carry on with their activities in crime control among residents of Ekwusigo Local
Government Area, examine the public perception of the activities of police in their crime control
among the residents of Ekwusigo LGA and identify challenges encountered by the police in their
activities of crime control in Ekwusigo Local Government Area. Ambiguous terms were defined,
and the study was grounded in two theories: social control theory by Thomas Hobbes and
performance theory by Moore and Braga. A descriptive survey research design was adopted
employing questionnaires as data collection instruments and simple random sampling was
utilized, with a sample size of 399 chosen from a total population of 301,846 using Taro Yamani’s
formula. Findings revealed that while the police in Ekwusigo Local Government Area engage in
various activities aimed at crime control, their effectiveness is hindered by challenges such as a
lack of resources and corruption. Recommendations included a comprehensive approach
involving the provision of adequate resources and equipment, the implementation of strict anti-
corruption policies and monitoring systems within the police force, and the encouragement of
community involvement in reporting and addressing corruption cases.
