Abstract
This study examines the impact of manpower development on organizational performance in
selected companies in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The main objective was to determine how
training, skill acquisition, and employee development initiatives influence productivity,
efficiency, and overall corporate growth. The study adopted a descriptive survey design, and
data were collected from both management and staff of selected organizations through
structured questionnaires. A sample size was drawn using the simple random sampling
technique, while data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical tools.
Findings revealed that manpower development significantly enhances employee competence,
job satisfaction, and organizational productivity. The study also found that continuous
training and capacity-building programs lead to improved innovation, reduced employee
turnover, and better service delivery. However, it was observed that inadequate funding, lack
of management commitment, and poor training evaluation hinder effective manpower
development in some organizations. The study concludes that sustained investment in
manpower development is essential for achieving competitive advantage and long-term
organizational success. It recommends that companies in Port Harcourt should adopt
comprehensive training policies, encourage continuous professional development, and align
manpower development programs with organizational goals to maximize performance
outcomes.
