Abstract
The Niger Delta Basin is one of the most prolific hydrocarbon provinces in the world, with complex petroleum systems that have been the focus of extensive exploration and production activities. This study aims to model the petroleum systems of selected parts of the Niger Delta Basin, with a focus on understanding the concepts and applications that govern hydrocarbon generation, migration, accumulation, and preservation.
Using a combination of geological and geophysical data, the research investigates the source rock characteristics, reservoir quality, and trap configurations within the study area. Basin modeling techniques were applied to simulate the maturation of source rocks and the timing of hydrocarbon generation and expulsion. Additionally, the study evaluated the migration pathways and identified potential hydrocarbon accumulations.
The results indicate that the studied parts of the Niger Delta Basin possess significant petroleum potential, with key findings highlighting the critical role of faulting and structural traps in hydrocarbon entrapment. The integration of basin modeling with seismic and well data provided a comprehensive understanding of the subsurface, enabling the identification of prospective areas for exploration.
