Abstract
Cartoons have emerged as a powerful medium with the potential to influence social and economic development within societies, including Nigeria. This study explores the influence of cartoons on the social and economic development of Etsako West Local Government Area in Nigeria. The study adopted descriptive statistical method of data analysis. Althrough a multi-choice, close-ended questionnaire were implored with a few open-ended items as data gathering instrument, the study examines the perceptions, attitudes, and behaviors of residents towards animated cartoons and their impact on various aspects of social and economic life. Cartoons serve as sources of entertainment, education, and cultural expression, providing opportunities for socialization, language development, and moral learning. Moreover, animated cartoons contribute to the local economy through advertising revenue, merchandise sales, and tourism promotion, creating employment opportunities and stimulating economic growth. However, the study also identifies challenges associated with the influence of animated cartoons, including concerns about cultural authenticity, gender representation, and commercialization. Some residents express apprehension about the potential negative effects of violent or inappropriate content on children's behavior and psychological well-being. Additionally, there are disparities in access to animated cartoons, with rural areas facing infrastructure limitations and socioeconomic barriers to media consumption. The implications of animated cartoons on social and economic development in Etsako West Local Government Area are multifaceted. Positive aspects include the promotion of cultural diversity, creativity, and entrepreneurship, while negative aspects include the reinforcement of stereotypes, consumerism, and social inequalities. The study recommends strategies for harnessing the potential of animated cartoons to support sustainable development goals, including promoting media literacy, fostering local content creation, and encouraging responsible consumption practices. It was concluded that animated cartoons can significantly contribute to social development in Etsako West Local Government and Nigeria as a whole. These cartoons often convey messages about social values, ethics, and cultural norms, which can influence the behavior and attitudes of children and adolescents. It was recommended by the researcher that the government should encourage the production and dissemination of educational cartoons that align with the local curriculum and promote learning in subjects such as science, mathematics, history and language and also engage parents, caregivers, and community leaders in discussions about the influence of animated cartoons on children's development and well-being.
