Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study investigates the factors militating against the learning of reading in English Language among senior secondary school students in Gwagwalada Area Council, FCT-Abuja. Data for the study were collected through the use of questionnaires. Four research objectives were formulated and converted into research questions to guide the study. Primary data were obtained by administering questionnaires to English Language teachers who were randomly selected from ten (10) senior secondary schools in the area. The sample consisted of one hundred (100) English Language teachers drawn from five selected schools: Government Secondary School, Gwagwalada; Government Day Secondary School, Gwagwalada; School for the Gifted, Gwagwalada; Government Senior Secondary School, Hajj Camp; and Christ the King College, Gwagwalada. The study adopted a quantitative research design, and the collected data were analyzed using frequency counts and simple percentages presented in tabular form. The findings revealed that lack of instructional materials, ineffective teaching methodologies, large class sizes, and inadequate teacher motivation are major factors hindering the learning of reading in English Language among senior secondary school students in Gwagwalada Area Council, FCT-Abuja.
