Effect of Ethanol Leaf Extract of Ceiba Pentandra on Serum Antioxidants in Potassium Bromate-Induced Toxicity in Wistar Rats

The study investigated the impact of ethanol leaf extract of Ceiba pentandra on serum antioxidants in Wistar rats exposed to potassium bromate-induced toxicity. Potassium bromate is known to induce oxidative stress and disrupt the antioxidants in the body. The research aimed to explore the potential of the extract to counteract the toxic effects of potassium bromate by accessing its influence on serum antioxidants. Wistar rats were divided into different groups, including a control group, a group exposed to potassium bromate, and groups treated with varying doses of ethanol leaf extract of Ceiba pentandra along with potassium bromate exposure, and a group treated with vitamin C which served as a positive control. Blood samples were collected to analyze the levels of various antioxidants such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase and others. Results indicated that the ethanol leaf extract of Ceiba pentandra exhibited significant antioxidants properties by enhancing the level of antioxidants in the serum of rats exposed to potassium bromate. The extract demonstrated the ability to mitigate the oxidative stress induced by potassium bromate, thereby protecting the antioxidant defense system in the rats. In conclusion, the study highlighted the potential of the ethanol leaf extract of Ceiba pentandra as a therapeutic agent to quell the potassium bromate-induced toxicity by modulating the serum antioxidant levels. Further research is warranted to elucidate the underlying mechanisms and optimize the dosage for potential therapeutic applications.
