Abstract
ABSTRACT
The study was designed and conducted to examine the impact of democracy on
Nigerians’ attitude in the 2023 presidential election using Ado Ekiti residents as the
case study. Three research questions and three null hypotheses were raised in
justifying the study. The study employs a Taro Yamane sampling method, targeting
150 total population of civil servants in Ado Ekiti, with 100 samples used after
calculation, to gather data on their perceptions and experiences regarding the
electoral process. The Instrument (Questionnaire) developed for the study was duly
validated and the reliability was tested with test – retest methods and Chronbach
Alpha coefficient of 0.90 was ascertained which further indicated that the instrument
was reliable. The findings reveal significant concerns about the integrity of
traditional paper-based voting systems, which are susceptible to manipulation and
fraud. The study highlights that manual counting and unprotected transmission of
results can lead to voter distrust and low participation rates. Additionally, the
research indicates that political parties, candidates, and the media play crucial roles
in shaping voters' attitudes towards democracy, with effective communication
strategies positively influencing public perception. The study emphasizes the need
for reforms in the electoral process to enhance transparency and trust among voters.
It recommends the adoption of more secure electronic voting technologies and
improved voter education initiatives to mitigate the risks associated with electoral fraud
